4 Paid / Residential Internship Positions Available for the Summer of 2016

 

Center for Adventure & Experiential Learning (CAEL):

Located in the Allegheny Mountains of Western Maryland, on the shores of Deep Creek Lake, the is a division of the at creates custom designed group programs utilizing the expert staff of the Adventuresports Institute™, a network of regional partners and the unique natural resources of our area. CAEL programs are adventure-based and focus on educational objectives, team development, and personal enrichment.

Program Overview:

CAEL is a growing auxiliary program based at Garrett College, home to the Adventuresports Institute™ (ASI). The internship program has been designed to be flexible to meet the needs of students interested in the various aspects of running a multifaceted outdoor education, recreation and tourism business. There are many opportunities to gain experience in a variety of disciplines from the outdoor recreation field to the business industry, from marketing to outdoor photography and videography. The internship can also be designed to meet eachstudent’s internship requirements such as hours, projects, site visitations, etc.

 

Intern Responsibilities:

Main responsibilities will include:

·Rotating evening duty for summer camps and overnight groups

·Camper supervision

·Outside group/program assistance

·Field staff which may include but is not limited to, leading activities such as hiking, canoeing, challenge course, rock climbing, camping, campfires, supervision at meals, accompanying campers to the pool and on activities such as whitewater rafting

·Safety Management

Other duties may include:

·Program photography/videography

·Assisting with group check-in

·Staffing an adventure race

·Office duties

·Marketing development

·Program development

Note: Other non-residential internships may be available based on an intern’s discipline and may include additional and/or alternative responsibilities and compensation arrangements.

Intern Requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a College/University, preferably in an Outdoor Recreation/Education, Recreation and Tourism, Leisure Science, Environmental Science or similar degree program

Note: Some internship opportunities may be available to other majors based on CAEL needs such as Business, IT, Marketing, etc.

  • Must have current FirstAid & CPR Certification (preferably Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder)

Note: Intern may be able to obtain this certification at CAEL prior to beginning internship (at intern’s expense)

  • Must submit to a State of Maryland Child Protective Services Background Check and a Fingerprint Federal and State Criminal Background Check

 

PreferredQualifications:

  • A minimum of one year experience in the field of outdoor education/recreation and/or experiential education and/or a minimum of one year working with youth programming
  • A minimum of two verifiable certifications/completed trainings in outdoor disciplinessuch as: Red Cross Life Guard, ACA Canoe Instructor, Challenge Course Facilitator (specific location), ACCT Challenge Course Manager Certification, Leave No Trace Master Educator, etc.

Compensation:

  • Experience: Field, program development, and management experience with a college outdoor adventure education, recreation and tourism program. Experience in the use of recreation and tourism as a tool for sustainable economic development in a rural area.
  • Stipend: An estimated $1000 stipend will be paid per intern based on a minimum 6 week commitment. (Stipend may vary based on hourly commitment).
  • Housing: Housing will be provided in the Garrett College Laker Hall student apartments. Interns may be required to share a suite and may also be required to stay in other accommodations during their night duties. More information on accommodations:

  • Access to Fitness Center and Pool: Community Aquatics and Recreation Complex located on the Garrett College campus:
  • Skills Development and training: Potential opportunity to develop skills in challenge course facilitation, team building and various adventure sports.
  • Time Off: Ample time off will be allotted for interns to explore one of the most diverse concentrations of adventure sports on the East Coast!

World-class whitewater: Savage, Youghiogheny, Cheat; Lakes: Deep Creek Lake, New Germany, Yough Reservoir…; 6 State Parks, abundant State Forest Land, Water skiing and Wakeboarding, Rock Climbing (Seneca Rocks, Coopers Rock, Fork Run), Fly fishing (Casselman River, Yough, Bear Creek…) Hiking, Mountain Biking, Cycling, Adventure Racing (Savage Man Triathalon, Race up the Face), Home to the Adventure Sports Center International Whitewater Course, WISP Resort, and host of the 2014 International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Championships.

Dates:Residential Interns needed between June 1-Aug 30, 2016.

Exact summer dates are negotiable. Summer interns may begin sooner or later than the dates provided. The duration of the internship is dependent on the interns program and the stipend desired. The dates provided illustrate a window of need for the residential internship positions.

Fall and spring internships are also available. CAEL accepts interns year-round for a variety of positions.
