Touch of Nature Environmental Center Adventure Program Internship
Location: Southern Illinois University's Touch of Nature Environmental Center, Makanda, IL
Description:The Adventure Program Intern (API) will act as a program leader to the Program Coordinator in the facilitation of outdoor adventure activities and experiential education under the direct supervision of a Program Coordinator. The API will be responsible for assisting in the leadership, instruction and supervision of participants in specialized outdoor activities. The API will also assist in program planning, promotion and evaluation of outdoor educational/recreational activities. A key component of the API's duties will be to provide for the physical needs and safety of participants. A final component will be the maintenance, care and knowledge of program equipment, gear and facilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in the leadership, instruction and supervision of participants in specialized outdoor activities such as: rock climbing, high ropes course facilitation, team building, canoeing, rappelling, interpretive nature hikes, residential youth camps, and other adventure based activities
- Assists in providing for the physical needs and safety of participants
- Assists in program planning for outdoor educational/recreational activities
- Is responsible for program equipment, gear and facilities
- Assists in program evaluation
- Develop and implement a project that furthers the mission of Touch of Nature and Underway Adventures
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Outgoing, hardworking, customer service oriented attitude
- Enthusiastic and capable of working with people of various ages and abilities while maintaining a positive, professional demeanor
- A desire to understand the theories, philosophies, and techniques relevant to wilderness adventure programming
- Applicants must have a Wilderness First Aid background, Wilderness First Responder preferred
- Experience and training in one or more of the following fields is desirable:
- Education
- Outdoor Leadership
- Recreation
- Human Services
- Forestry
Prior experience with various outdoor skills such as: backpacking, canoeing, navigation, lifesaving, climbing, rappelling, high ropes course, and team building activities are beneficial but not required
- Help lead trips all over southern Illinois and eastern Missouri, climbing, hiking and paddling
- On site staff housing
- Work and live on 3,100 acres, with opportunities to hike, paddle, and rock climb right out your back door
Position: Extra-Help staff; Residency may be required
Duration: June 1, 2016 through August 15, 2016
Salary Range: $1000/month
