JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Director of Recreation, the Athletics Superintendent is responsible for planning, creating, running, and overseeing assigned adult and youth sports, athletic clinics, seasonal camps, athletic related events, permitting athletic fields and managing athletic field rentals. This position will also be responsible for several dozen part-time employees, along with independent contractors and volunteers.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and recommend the employment of volunteers, instructors, coaches and supervisors.
  • Supervise, plan, organize and implement programs.
  • Supervise operations of the Inwood Sports Complex, scheduling of adult softball leagues, rentals and concessions.
  • Supervise operations of the Inwood Soccer Complex, scheduling of all flag football and soccer leagues, rentals and concessions.
  • Supervise youth soccer program.
  • Supervise adult athletic leagues.
  • Train, schedule, evaluate and discharge all levels of staff in the program as needed.
  • Supervise youth basketball and flag football leagues.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations for improvement of programs.
  • Compile bid specifications, purchase requests and special reports as needed.
  • Plan annual budget.
  • Attend all staff and other related meetings as requested.
  • Order supplies and equipment for programs and Inwood Sports Complex operations.
  • Prepare class descriptions and program schedules for athletic programs.
  • Submit information for the publication of the Joliet Park District’s Leisure Guide for the Communications Department.
  • Promote involvement and organize meetings with outside organizations and parent groups.
  • Maintain communication with supervisor and staff.
  • Organize a variety of special events and volunteers to work at these special events.
  •  Implement procedures for first aid and emergencies.
  • Investigate all reported accidents and incidents and report them to the Director of Recreation.
  • Supervise and assist in providing a safe environment for staff, participants and spectators.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Must supervise all support staff in the program between 100 - 150 part-time staff members. Duties include scheduling, training, evaluating, disciplining and discharge of support staff. This person must be able to interact with others and assist during busy times.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the essential functions and responsibilities of this position, the employee regularly works in a typical office environment with moderate noise from office machines and conversation. This position is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and toxic chemicals.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The individual in this position must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time, have high functioning use of hands, fingers and legs, must be able to talk and hear.

POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This is a full-time position. Daily schedule is Monday-Friday during traditional work hours and will also require evenings and weekends based on program, special event, and facility needs.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program planning, scheduling, and supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in computers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of customer service.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours as evenings and weekends will be involved.
  • Demonstrated initiative, dependability, good judgment, tact, leadership, and the capability to work in a positive manner with the general public, and the Park District staff.
  • Must have ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos and write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the Park District. Ability to effectively present and respond to questions from staff, customers an
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education or related field from an accredited college or university. At least two years’ experience in facility management, teaching, coaching, and administration in a supervisory position preferred. Current CPR/First Aid Certification. Must be at least 21 years of age.
