Announcement of an Internship Position with Outdoor Pursuits
The Outdoor Pursuits program at Fort Lewis College is accepting applications for an Intern. The goal of this position is to provide interns professional working experience in a college/university outdoor program. The intern will assist in the management and operation of the OP Equipment Rental Center. The Intern of Outdoor Pursuits will work under the supervision of the Coordinator of Outdoor Pursuits. This is a professional full-time, semester-long (academic year-long option available) position. Targeted start date August 10, 2015.
The College and Community: Fort Lewis College is Colorado’s public liberal arts college. More than 4,000 students pursue Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 24 degree programs. The canyons, rivers and deserts of Utah are only a couple hours drive away from Durango.
The Program: Outdoor Pursuits is a student funded recreational program that has been on the campus since 1977. The Outdoor Pursuits program leads weekly trips, operates an equipment use program, manages a climbing wall, and a ski/bike shop. OP is housed in the Student Life Center, an award winning, state-of-the-art recreation facility. Outdoor Pursuits has over 1000 student members, and the program is an integral piece in Fort Lewis College’s commitment to Student Life.
Qualifications: The Intern should have some experience working with outdoor equipment as well as with guiding and/or facilitating trips in the outdoors. Previous experience with a college/university outdoor program, commercial guide or outfitter, or work with the National Outdoor Leadership School, Outward Bound, or like program is desired.
Required
·Enrolled in or recently completed a college/university degree track related to outdoor programming, recreation, leadership, or experiential education.
·Repair and maintenance of outdoor equipment including ski/board tuning, bike repair, and sewing skills
·Retail and/or rental operational experience
·Strong outdoor skills in at least four of the following avocations: Rafting, Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Hiking/Backpacking, Backcountry Skiing/Boarding, Rock Climbing, Mountaineering.
·Current Wilderness First Responder Certification
Additional Preferred Skills/Qualifications
·Work experience with a college/university outdoor recreation and/or education program.
·Experience working with Word, Excel, Outlook, PageMaker, Photoshop, and similar computer programs.
·Knowledge of the outdoor recreational opportunities in the Four-Corners region
Salary: The Intern of the Outdoor Pursuits program is a professional staff position and will receive room, board and a monthly stipend. The position requires a flexible work schedule.
